220 Million Sheep Marketplace Bitcoin Theft Pursue – Business Insider
The thief is presently attempting to hide a stash of at least 96,000 Bitcoins (about $100 million), the pair said te a conversation on Reddit.
The two Reddit users, “SheepReloaded2” and “NodManOut” have become heroes on a subreddit dedicated to tracking the thief. They believe the theft &mdash, which Business Insider told you about yesterday&mdash, is one of the largest heists te history.
But there is just one problem (for the thief): His haul is so thick it catapults out like a sore thumb whenever he attempts to launder the money. And his pursuers believe he will be incapable to contant out a sum that large without exposing himself. “He has 1% of the world’s bitcoins. Its hard to clean and sell more than Four or Five btc at a time,” SheepReloaded2 says.
The stakes are high: It’s not simply that there is a large amount of stolen specie at stake. Because Sheep Marketplace wasgoed a toevluchthaven for criminals who do business, it’s likely that some of the victims te this theft want the perpetrator dead.
“I won’t find this dude. Somebody else will,” SheepReloaded2 told Reddit. “I assume he’ll be jailed, blackmailed, tantalized or killed. I dunno.”
The stuk began te late November when the operators of Sheep Marketplace &mdash, which had risen to prominance after the FBI took down Silk Road, the previous large, anonymous hub for drug dealers &mdash, announced they were closing down because the webpagina wasgoed hacked. The hacker fooled users into thinking their online Bitcoin wallets were utter when te fact they had bot looted.
Bitcoin’s “blockchain” ledger keeps track of every single transaction, so anyone can see what happens to the money. And the transactions are so large it’s evident that they involve Sheep Marketplace money.
NodManOut figured out a way to track the money, he posted on Reddit (errors te the original):
. its effortless when pursuing a big amount so say you transfer 500k and that’s.tied to Three puny.deposits ranging from 3-5hundred now you just find which wallet got the 500k. or te this example he.wasgoed.dumping random amounts along the way so wallet would be 498k and keep.following doesn’t take a genius, its pretty demonstrable when you got a bunch of withdraws coming out of the wallet wij know wasgoed the right one at the amounts of 940k numerous times then he would just.do the same thing with those spil I’ve stated.before.numerous times you can check wallets I’ve listed already to see for yourself
SheepReloaded2 took NodManOut’s advice and began sending the thief little fractions of Bitcoins, specifically 0.00666 Bitcoins. The “666” amount helped him go after further transactions involving that lil’ sum. Now that SheepReloaded2’s money is mixed te with the thief’s money, he can see where the stolen money is going &mdash, spil long spil he sends another “666” amount into any fresh wallet where the money grounds.
Its like running a marathon through fog, listening for the footsteps of other stoepiers. It helps if there are 96,000 of them, tho’! . This dude is good, but he’s on his last gams. If he can sell a single bitcoin, I’ll be astonished.
He also praised NodManOut for being the very first to spot the “uitgang” the thief had used from Sheep Market:
This is the largest heist of all time. Is it ter the newspapers? No TheNodManOut made the hardest spot – the escape route wallet from sheep. I assume he normally drives round ter a van solving mysteries.
. He has 1% of the world’s bitcoin. He likes neat entire numbers. When lil’ fractions abruptly show up, its demonstrable he’s tumbling them. almost all the pants ter the washing machine are his, so sheep swag mixes with sheep swag, and comes out looking like. er, sheep swag.
Then, he just combines it back together into the same sized lump!
He’s very likely panicked and wished he only had 100 bitcoins. His laptop hard drive is worth millions. Every day he spends another $3million, tumbling his bitcoin with his bitcoin.
Yeah its tedious because after he splits those down you have to go after that through another 50-100wallets untill he evidently thinks they’ve bot moved securely
Sheepreloaded2 has become manic ter his pursuit of the money:
I followed him for hours yesterday, he wasgoed creating fresh wallets, moving 2000 BTC ter, waiting for enough confirmations, then moving 2000BTC into the next wallet, leaving the balance at zero. I would see the fresh wallet before the very first confirmation even appeared on the blockchain. I’d point my mobile at the QR code, and send a memorable number. He vereiste have felt he satan wasgoed pursuing him.
“No wonder the bitcoin price is high. Half of them are out of circulation!,” Sheepreloaded2 told Reddit. He believes the thief lives ter the Czech Republic, and has vowed to never zekering pursuing him:
I have a rekentuig linked to the internet, so like everyone, I can track every bitcoin wallet for the surplus of time. $200M is the largest theft ter history. eventually it might get te the newspaper. the police could even assign an officer to look for him.
I asked very politely, you know what us brits are like. But he stole from the wrong dude. I will pursue him on foot through hell and out the other side if I have to, so help mij heer.
